Vision, clarity, goals – is it all just ‘management talk?’

We hear the words vision, goals, clarity etc., A LOT (and as a Business Coach I definitely do overuse them!). So, let’s explore what it all means and if it can help us develop ourselves and our business or hinder it.

The term “vision” might sound daunting, but it shouldn’t be. “Vision” is simply defined as “the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom,” and we can all do this quite easily. Your vision is where you want to be and your path for how you’ll get there. Depending on what you want to achieve in life, this may be a simple or if you identify the gap as being significant it will be quite detailed. There is no right or wrong vision because it’s personal—something that only you can decide for yourself— and this process is to help you recognise that importance of creating your own unique vision.

I have some creative clients that get put off by the thought of looking too far in the future so if you are someone that doesn’t like thinking too far in the future here are some ideas to help with this?

  • You first have to clearly see your end destination the place where you end up, this doesn’t mean ‘where do you want to be in 5 years’ time’ this could mean by the end of the year, you would like to achieve X.
  • Do something creative with your vision so a dream/vision board or a roadmap/mind map (some ideas below)
  • Use a goal setting model the works for you: GROW model for example:
    Goal-how will you know when you have reached the goal
    Reality – What is happening now (what, who, when, and how often)? What is the effect or result of this? What is stopping me from achieving this goal?
    Options – explore obstacles in each option
    Will – How can you keep yourself motivated? When do you need to review progress? Daily, weekly, monthly?
  • Communicate the goal and monitor your progress. Accountability and monitoring tend to go hand in hand — it is not unusual to be more mindful of completing a task when we know someone is going to ask you how you are getting on, so speak to a trusted friend or mentor or come along to one of my business groups (shameless plug)!
  • Start taking action today It is what it says on the tin, why spend time on writing down your goals and talking about them if you don’t start putting them into action so take those small steps towards the big reward. Remember to be kind to yourself along the way and celebrate those small wins!

So, in a short answer, no I truly believe that clarity, vision and goals are very important in helping us, but I do think they can seem daunting and overwhelming so hopefully some of these tips will help you. Also, some helpful links to articles on vision boards:
